The IQ Level 3 Award in Paediatric First Aid (QCF) is aimed at individuals who intend to develop and gain formal recognition of their knowledge, understanding and skills of Paediatric First Aid. The qualification is applicable to those with responsibility for infants or children in any setting. By completing the two mandatory units, all learners will cover the essentials of Paediatric First Aid, including roles and responsibilities, assessing emergency situations, acting safely and effectively and providing First Aid to infants and children in a variety of situations. These situations could relate to breathing, being unresponsive, foreign body airway obstructions, wounds, bleeding, shock, fractures, dislocations; head, neck and back injuries; conditions affecting the eyes, ears and nose; chronic medical conditions, sudden illnesses, extremes of temperature, electric shock, burns, scalds, poisoning, bites and stings. Objectives of the qualification include preparing learners to progress to a qualification at the same level – i.e. IQ Level 3 Award in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF) IQ Level 3 Certificate in Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (QCF), requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding, meeting relevant programmes of learning, preparing learners for employment and supporting a role in the workplace.

This qualification replaces the IQ Level 2 Award in Paediatric First Aid  (QCF)  600/8676/2 and centres who are already approved to offer this qualification will be automatically approved to offer the new one.

Please note: Resuscitation Guidelines 2015

The Resuscitation Council (UK) published new guidelines online on the 15th October 2015 following a review of resuscitation science. Reviews of this nature are undertaken every five years and European and UK guidelines will become more aligned.

The changes involved were subtle and so they did not require changes to be made to first aid qualifications. However, it is important that centres approved to offer first aid qualifications are kept aware of changes to the latest guidelines, which include the sequence of CPR.

Full details of changes made can be found on the website of the Resuscitation Council (UK) at https://www.resus.org.uk/#
