About this Qualification

The IQ Level 3 Certificate in Fire Safety (Fire Auditors) is a qualification for individuals who work or intend to work in a position of responsibility for fire safety arrangements. It provides learners with formal recognition of their competence to work as a regulatory fire safety auditor for simple premises. All learners will cover the fundamentals of fire auditing by way of mandatory units, which address potential hazards, evidence gathering, risk assessments, protection measures, systems and visits in the context of simple as opposed to complex premises. Objectives of the qualification include: preparing learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding, meeting relevant programmes of learning and supporting a role in the workplace.

Definitions of Simple and Complex Premises

This qualification features units which refer to ‘simple premises’ in the title. This distinguishes them from ‘complex premises’ which are relevant to higher level fire safety qualifications.

Simple premises are defined as those buildings for which the means of escape are covered by the Communities and Local Government guides. These typically include offices and shops, factories and warehouses, sleeping accommodation, residential care premises, educational premises and small and medium places of assembly.

Complex premises are defined as those buildings for which the means of escape cannot be adequately covered by the Communities and Local Government guides. It does not include those premises requiring a fire safety engineer to assess.

A link to the Communities and Local Government guides website is located in the resources section at the end of this specification.

Progression

Learners can progress to the IQ Level 4 Certificate in Fire Safety (Fire Auditors) and the IQ Level 4 Diploma in Fire Safety (Fire Inspectors) using credits already achieved as there is an overlap of units.
