About this Qualification

The IQ Level 3 Award for Deliverers of Physical Intervention Training in the Private Security Industry (QCF) is a qualification for trainers who wish to deliver Physical Intervention Skills for the Private Security Industry. This qualification is a mandatory requirement for trainers wishing to deliver the SIA licence linked Door supervision qualification/ Physical Intervention Unit.

Centres must adhere to the conditions for delivery and assessment as listed in the SIA’s “Introduction to Learning Leading Towards Licence-linked Qualifications. Requirements for Awarding Organisations/Bodies and Training Providers” and the IQ Centre Guide for Security Qualifications.

 Unit 1 Physical intervention unit - Knowledge: Centres will book the exams in the usual way and receive the question and answer paper, mark scheme (MS) and additional question booklet. All assessment criteria must be met, centres will mark the assessment using the MS provided. The centre will identify any AC that have not been met by the learner and provide additional learning as appropriate. Using the questions from the additional question booklet the learner will be re- assessed on the relevant AC so that all AC are met. The centre should complete the relevant part in the question and answer booklet. 

 

Assessments for knowledge elements must be carried out under exam conditions and a full SIA Identification check must be completed. Please see the IQ Centre Guidance for Security Qualifications available from the IQ website for details of examination requirements and how to book an assessment. The List of SIA acceptable forms of identification is included at the end of this specification.

 Unit 1 Physical intervention unit - Demonstration of practical skills: This element is internally assessed by the centre and quality assured by IQ. Please see the guidance on delivery and assessment at the end of the unit. A learner observation assessment record is available on the website.

 Unit 2: This unit is internally set and marked and quality assured by IQ. Assessment would be portfolio and observation based, an achievement record form is provided for centres to aid submission of this unit for Quality Assurance.

This qualification is not graded, successful learners achieve a pass. 

Learner Entry Requirements

Learners must have appropriate teaching qualification e.g. PTLLS and suitable level 3 qualification in the delivery of conflict management training. It is the centres responsibility to evidence this for audit purposes.

It is the centre’s responsibility to ensure that each learner is sufficiently competent in the use of the English and/or Welsh language.

Tutor Requirements

All trainers delivering this qualification must have:

1)       Teaching qualification achieved the Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) or a teaching or training qualification at SVQ level 3 (or equivalent), which has been accredited by SQA/QCA/Ofqual or validated by a HEI, or equivalent such as:

  • PTLLS, CTLLS or DTLLS
  • Certificate in Education
  • Post Graduate Certificate in Education
  • SVQ levels 3 and 4 in Learning and Development
  • Scottish Training Qualification for Further Education (TQFE)
  • Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE)

 

2)       Conflict management: all trainers delivering scenario-based conflict management training for licence-linked qualifications to have received relevant training. Trainers are required to hold a qualification at or above NQF/QCF Level 3 in The Delivery of Conflict Management Training.

 

3)       Sector competency Trainers delivering the learning leading to licence-linked qualifications must demonstrate that they have the necessary experience, knowledge and understanding of Physical Intervention delivery in which they are providing training.

Awarding organisations will require sufficient information about a trainer’s occupational experience for consideration in the approval process, for example, significant experience of delivering the Level 3 Deliverers of Physical Intervention qualification (or similar programme) working in the private security industry or working in a role that can be mapped to the requirements of the private security industry.

To ensure that trainers have the right occupational expertise, trainers should have to have been delivering Physical Intervention at level 3 for an average of 45 hours per year.

Existing trainers must demonstrate to the awarding organisations that they are taking sufficient steps to keep their occupational expertise up to date.  Suitable steps would include attendance at relevant conferences and seminars, and continuing work experience in the sector.  Trainers must be able to demonstrate evidence of a suitable level of professional development in the sector, which should include the equivalent of at least thirty hours every year spent in a combination of training, increasing professional knowledge through other means or working in the industry.

4)       Physical Intervention All trainers delivering physical intervention skills training for this qualification must hold all of the following:

  • a suitable teaching/training qualification as defined in 4.2
  • a suitable level 3 qualification in conflict management training as defined in 4.3
  • a level 3 Award for Deliverers of Physical Intervention Training in the Private Security Industry (QCF); and
  • a current certificate (updated annually) from an approved level 3 programme provider that confirms the trainer's ability to deliver the skills in that  approved level 3 programme.
