Qualification Purpose
About this Qualification
The IQ Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching will support learners in the acquisition of skills in using mathematics in academic subjects, professional and vocational contexts and in public and personal life.
The qualification will prepare learners to progress to mathematics qualifications at a higher level, or to qualifications in other subject areas where mathematics skills would be an advantage. It will also support the development of personal skills and/or knowledge in mathematics and has been identified by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) as an appropriate qualification to develop the knowledge and skills needed to teach Functional Skills Mathematics. Objectives of the qualification include: preparing learners to progress to a qualification in the same subject area but at a higher level or requiring more specific knowledge, skills and understanding, preparing learners to progress to a qualification in another subject area and to give learners personal growth and engagement in learning.
The criteria for this qualification were developed by Lifelong Learning UK in 2007, and revised in 2010. The criteria are available on the LSIS website.
Progression
Learners who have achieved the Level 3 Award in Mathematics for Numeracy Teaching could progress to the:
- Level 3 or 4 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS)
- Level 3 or 4 Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (CTLLS)
- Level 5 Diploma in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector (DTLLS)
Level 5 Subsidiary Diploma in Teaching Mathematics (Numeracy) in the Lifelong Learning Sector

Structure
To achieve this qualification learners must achieve 12 credits in total.
Assessment
All the units are knowledge-based and there is no requirement to undertake assessed practical teaching to achieve this qualification. The assessment consists of two elements:
- A single IQ externally set and internally marked knowledge based assessment conducted under examination conditions.
- Portfolio assessment to demonstrate the practical application of each of the units chosen.

All assessment criteria must be met and mapped and the location of the evidence indicated in the Achievement Record which is available from the IQ website/on request.
The qualification is not graded and successful learners achieve a pass.
Access to the externally set and internally marked assessment: Once centres have been approved to offer this qualification they will be given access to a secure portal from where they can download the question paper, Mark scheme and guidance.
Learner Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, it is expected the learners will have undertaken an initial assessment in mathematics which indicates they are working at level 2 or above, before undertaking this qualification.
Tutor Requirements
All trainers delivering this qualification must have, or be working towards an appropriate teaching qualification at level 4 or above and have experience or qualifications in mathematics skills at Level 4 or above.
Examples of suitable teaching qualifications include: Level 4 PTTLS or CTTLS, DTTLS, Qualified tutor status.
Centre Requirements
Centres must be approved by IQ in order to offer this qualification.
