Working at Heights qualification pilot puts safety first

Industry Qualifications, the first pan sector mutual awarding organisation in the UK, has approved Integer Training to offer an accredited qualification in Working at Heights; the IQ Level 2 Organisation Award in Working at Heights.

The course is designed to introduce both the knowledge and understanding that underpins safe practice as well as develop the skills required to work at height. Covering legislation appertaining to working at height and associated equipment, trainees consider basic risk assessment and protection against falls. From selecting suitable personal fall protection equipment and understanding its limitations, to pre-use checks, maintenance and disposal, the course provides a sound grounding in all aspects of working at height.

The development of the Working at Heights qualification has been undertaken in partnership with Specialist Training Consultants. Owned by Peter Gwilliam, with 30 years of experience as a fire fighter with the London Fire Brigade behind him, Peter has delivered Working at Height training over a number of years.

Peter said “At last, this basic course gives every fall protection user a qualification awarded by a nationally recognised awarding organisation.

The pilot course ran last week for an international company, was well received and a great success. Trainees enjoyed the practical nature of the course, with its emphasis on skills to ensure safe and efficient work at height, including use of a full body harness, energy absorbing lanyards and work positioning techniques moving both vertically and horizontally. Techniques and skills are initially introduced at low heights, and only when the basics are mastered do we progress the trainee to more exposed locations.”

Integer Training worked with Specialist Training Consultants to refine the programme and submit it for accreditation to Industry Qualifications. Paddy Frost, Managing Director of Integer Training, said:

“We can see a wide range of applications for this training, including those working in industrial, agricultural and commercial settings. We are already looking to develop a version for event stewards and stage technicians who work at heights, particularly those working in green field sites and stadiums.”
