About this Qualification
The IQ Level 3 Certificate in Close Protection is a qualification for individuals who work or would like to work as Close Protection Officers. It is based on the SIA Specification for Learning and Qualifications for Close Protection Operatives and in Conflict Management. Successful completion of the qualification enables learners to apply for an SIA licence in Close Protection. The qualification covers legislation, responsibilities and roles relevant to people working in the close protection industry; including: threat assessment, risk management, surveillance techniques, venue security operations, designing and demonstrating operational planning, interpersonal skills, teamwork, reconnaissance, conducting close protection foot drills, planning and selecting routes, vehicle movement tactics and operations, search techniques and procedures, and conflict management techniques. Objectives of this qualification are: meeting relevant programmes of learning, preparing learners for employment and supporting a role in the workplace.

Learners have to complete the one mandatory unit of 16 credits to achieve this qualification.

Assessment
Assessment is by multiple choice exam and Practical Demonstration/Assignment
The Multiple choice examination must be carried out under exam conditions and a full SIA Identification check must be completed. Please see the IQ Centre Guidance for Security Qualifications available from the IQ website for details of examination requirements and how to book an assessment. The List of SIA acceptable forms of identification is included at the end of this specification.
Demonstration of practical skills: This element is internally assessed by the centre and quality assured by IQ. Please see the guidance on delivery and assessment at the end of the unit. A learner observation assessment record is available at the end of this document. For details of how each Assessment criterion is assessed please see the unit on page 7.

Learner Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements. However, learners should be able to work at level 2 or above and be proficient in the use of English Language.
It is an SIA requirement that before claiming certification for each learner, centres must confirm that each learner has a valid first aid qualification.
First aid awards recognised by the SIA are:
- First Aid at Work - 4 day course (HSE approved)
- First Person on Scene (FPOS) Intermediate Award - 30 hours (Edexcel / IHCD)
Learners should present your valid first aid certificate to your training provider before you start your training. If you do not have a recognised first aid award you will need to get one in order to get your licence. This is in addition to the minimum 150 hours knowledge and practical skills training.
It is the centre’s responsibility to check the learners’ first aid certificate and maintain relevant records for audit purposes
Tutor Requirements
All trainers delivering this qualification must have
- Appropriate teaching qualification e.g. PTLLS
- NQF or QCF Level 3 qualification in the delivery of conflict management training
- Three years frontline operational experience in the last ten, relevant to the area that they are training
- Continuous Professional development
- SIA Close Protection Licence
Centre Requirements
Centre requirements: Centres must meet the requirements listed in the “IQ Centre Guide for Security Qualifications/ Centre Requirements for delivering SIA licensed linked qualifications” available from website. In addition centres must be able to provide learners with the facilities necessary to carry out the practical element of this the qualification e.g. Car, principle etc
