IQ Certificates Presented at CABE Conference, Nigeria

The Centre for African Business Education (CABE) provides IQ accredited business education and training for individuals and organisations aimed at achieving effective operational excellence in African markets, whether you are on the ground in an African country or engaging from outside the continent, regardless of the sector.

On the 18th & 19th June 2015, CABE organised and held a conference in Abuja, Nigeria specifically for the Early Years Education sector, which is a fast developing business sector in Nigeria. The conference aimed to teach and promote International Best Practice in the management and operations of Early Years Educational institutions. The speakers included a combination of international and local speakers, with the key note speech delivered by the honourable former Nigerian Minister of Education, Mrs Obiagely Ezekwesili, providing a healthy mix of international and local knowledge.

With over 60 school owners, managers and teachers representing over 40 private schools, local and international exhibitors such as Oxford University Press, Hodder Education, and TTS Group, and a strong showing from the Federal Ministry of Education, the inaugural EVOLVE Early Years Education Conference has been hailed as a huge success.

In her address to the conference delegates, the Deputy Director, Early Childcare/Primary Education, Federal Ministry of Education – Mrs Adaba – said “Change has started from Early Education. There will be synergy between the Federal Min of Education and CABE. This is the beginning of that journey!”

She presented Level 6 African Business Management (ABM) certificates to course participants who achieved the IQ qualification.

IQ's Head of Business Development, supported the Centre for African Business Management (CABE) in the design and develop of their customised qualifications and commented "This innovative qualification includes core units on critical business and management skills and additionally enables course participants to contextualise the learning within a diverse range of sector focussed management environments. As well as the Early Years area described above, other areas include Beauty and Wellbeing, Retail Management, Commercial Agri-business, Film making and Performing Arts, Catering & Hospitality Management and Supply Chain Management".

Important Information about the IAM Diploma Suite

Replacement of the Level 4 Diploma in Business and Administration

The IQ IAM Level 4 Diploma in Business and Administration (601/2720/X) has been replaced with the IQ IAM Level 4 Certificate in Principles of Business Administration (601/6145/0). The new qualification is intended as a direct replacement of the existing diploma, with most of the learning content the same. More information about the new qualification can be found here:  

Extension to current IAM Diploma qualifications

Please note that the current IAM Diploma Qualifications have been extended for registrations until the end of this year. For the qualifications listed below, the last registration date for new candidates is 31st December 2015. The last date for completions is on the 31st December 2017.

Centres who are approved to offer the old version of the qualification will be contacted closer to the launch of the new qualification with information on how to become approved for the new qualifications.

Changes to Skills CFA ERR Workbook

The workbook accompanying the Employment Rights and Responsibilities (ERR) within the Business and Administration sector will no longer be freely available.

The ERR workbook will remain on the Skills CFA website until the 1st of May, after this time the ERR workbook will be available on the e-learning portal at a cost.  The online ERR workbook will be priced at £5 per learner and the Answerbook at £30.

The new e-learning portal will offer a communication and notification service for training providers and learners completing the Skills CFA ERR workbook.  There will also be a library and archive of Skills CFA documents and materials available to access, such as the newly developed Skills CFA ERR Answerbook which will be available for training providers and assessors to purchase.

IQ Reach Agreement with Synergy for Sri Lanka and the Maldives

UK Awarding Organisation, Industry Qualifications (IQ) have signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the Synergy School of Marketing and Business, to offer IQ/IAM management programmes in Sri Lanka and the Maldives.

Raymond Clarke, Chief Executive of IQ said “Having approved Synergy as an IQ centre, we are delighted to extend the relationship to work in a strategic partnership to develop the presence of IQ/IAM management qualifications and local Institute representation in Sri Lanka and the Maldives. Our objective is to build a network of quality providers across the globe for IQ and IQ/IAM qualifications, and the addition of Synergy to our network is most welcome”

Under the terms of the agreement, Synergy will offer a wide range of IQ/IAM programmes, and management qualifications relevant to the local environment and industries. Specific and specialised training with IQ certification is another unique feature of the partnership. IQ UK offers technical support and consultancy in a variety of industries.

Synergy School of Marketing and Business Colombo and London  was established in 1999, and is an accredited centre with the Chartered Institute of Marketing UK, running a wide range of CIM programmes. “The addition of the IQ/IAM qualifications will allow us to extend the breadth of our management programmes” said Michael Ranasinghe, Director of Synergy. “We are delighted to be able to work with IQ and the IAM as IQ develops its international presence and the IAM approaches its centenary, and look forward to providing an attractive offering for management development in Sri Lanka and the Maldives”.

IQ and Working for Wellbeing to launch the Federation of Workplace Wellbeing

Industry Qualifications and Working for Wellbeing have today announced the agreement of a Memorandum of Understanding, covering joint collaboration on work place well-being and in particular Psychological Risk Management.

Under the MOU, IQ and Working for Wellbeing have agreed to create the Federation for Workplace Wellbeing (FWW) within the framework of the Institute of Administrative Management, and to develop certification systems in response to PAS1010, which offers guidance and good practise on assessing and managing psychosocial risks at work and consequential outcomes such as stress.

Stress is one of the most common problems of the modern workplace, affecting the mental and physical well-being of over *55.6 million workers in the European Union each year and resulting in an estimated cost of around *20 billion Euro.

Jerry Thornton of Working for Wellbeing said "We have been working with IQ since 2012 on the development and delivery of qualifications in psychological risk management to level 7. The development of the Federation for Workplace Wellbeing (FWW) within IAM, an established management institute will provide an overarching framework for standards and support for organisations to tackle this very important issue".

Institute of Administrative Management Officially Re-launched

Following its closure at the end of 2013 and subsequent purchase by Industry Qualifications, we are delighted to reveal that the Institute of Administrative Management has been re-launched.

Membership applications and renewals are now being accepted and members will have access to a growing range of benefits as the year progresses, including the IAM’s quarterly Manager magazine, post-nominal letters and access to a range of CPD and networking events.

March Series Results for IAM Qualifications

IQ would like to say thank you to all IAM centres and learners for their support and patience whilst our dedicated team of moderators have been working their way through the March series of IAM examinations and assignments.

IQ takes the issue of quality assurance extremely seriously and with the recent influx of new centres and processes it was important to take our time to ensure that a robust and comprehensive moderation system was in place.

We regret to say that on the whole, the results from the March series have been disappointing. Whilst there have been a number of centres that have performed well, there is clear evidence emerging that some centres have not been assessing to the requisite level, in accordance with the Mark Scheme.

IQ will be working with these centres to ensure that standards improve over the coming weeks. Please be aware, however, that until we are confident that the evidence submitted by students is of the requisite standard and/or the performance of the centres’ have met IQ requirements, we will not be able to release results from these centres.

Coventry University London Campus Sign Agreement with Institute of Administrative Management

Coventry University London Campus, Industry Qualifications (IQ) and the Institute of Administrative Management (IAM) have announced that they have agreed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will underpin a growing relationship between the three bodies.

The agreement is designed to recognise IAM qualifications for direct entry into degree and masters qualifications offered by the University’s London Campus. The London Campus will also become involved in and host events for the IAM as it re-establishes its regional framework.

Raymond Clarke, Chief Executive of IQ and Managing Director of the IAM said “We are keen to ensure that IAM students have clearly defined progression routes into Universities that understand the content and structure of our qualifications, and who are able to respond appropriately to our students. We are seeking five or six Universities with whom we can establish close, strategic relationships for the benefit of members and students, and I am pleased to announce the agreement with Coventry University London Campus”.

As a result of the agreement, international students holding the IQ IAM Level 4 or Level 5 Business and Administrative Management diplomas will have a direct entry to the second year of the Coventry University London Campus Global Business Management degree or to the top up for the degree respectively. UK and International students holding the level 6 IQ IAM qualification will have access to any of the Master degrees offered in Business Management. We anticipate that with the relaxation of funding constraints on Universities from September 2015, the pathway to enter undergraduate programmes will be extended to UK students.

Important announcement for all centres approved by IQ to offer Skills CfA Apprenticeship qualifications

As you may be aware, Skills CfA is updating the majority of its apprenticeship frameworks for September 2014.

This includes Business and Administration, Customer Service, Management and Team Leading. If you are a centre currently approved by IQ to offer qualifications in any of these sectors, you will already have received the relevant information.

As part of the update, the existing knowledge and competence qualifications will be amalgamated into a new combined qualification from September. For example, the IQ Level 2 NVQ Certificate in Team Leading and the IQ Level 2 Certificate in Team Leading Principles will become the IQ IAM Level 2 Diploma in Team Leading.

As a result of the apprenticeship changes, IQ will be expiring all of the following qualifications:

  • if your centre is approved to offer only the current NVQ or both the current NVQ and the technical certificate of an apprenticeship, you will automatically be approved to offer the new combined diploma


  • if your centre is only approved to offer the technical certificate qualification of an apprenticeship, you will have to apply to be approved to offer the new combined qualification

The QAN numbers for the new qualifications will be available by August 2014.


Please be advised that the majority of the units within the new qualifications will not be taken from the current qualifications, but will cover a similar range of content. The specifications for the new qualifications will be available by August on the ‘Upcoming Qualifications’ section of the IQ website.

IQ Gain Approval for the Re-Registration of the UK’s Oldest Management Institute

Industry Qualifications (IQ) is pleased to announce that Companies House have agreed to the re-registration of the Institute of Administrative Management, after a consultation with stakeholders.

Commenting on the news, Raymond Clarke, Chief Executive of IQ, said “We would like to thank key members and organisational partners of IAM for their support during the re-registration process. This next twelve months are very important in the creation of a forward-looking, engaging Institute, culminating in the centenary celebrations for the IAM in 2015.

We have spent the last few months gathering the views and opinions of former members, and those that might be future members, to fuse the best of the past with the expectations of a modern and dynamic Institute. Whilst much of the focus for representative bodies serving the management sector in recent times has been on the issue of leadership, we believe that there is a real need to combine managerial and operational competence, and that the IAM can play a leading role in this arena”.

Unlike its previous manifestation, the new Institute will focus purely on membership services, with the qualifications activity being the responsibility of IQ, using the IAM brand for its management suite. The Institute will focus its resources on the development of regional and international membership networks, the provision of academic journals, the re-launch of Manager magazine and other membership benefits and services.

According to Clarke “Our target is to celebrate the centenary event with renewed confidence and energy, with the IAM clear of its role, and with the structures, services and vision in place to secure an international reputation as a leading authority on management development and representation”.

IAM Membership Consultation

In preparation for the relaunch of the Institute of Administrative Management as a membership organisation we are launching a consultation.

IQ is currently seeking the views of all current and former members of the IAM in order to determine respondents' previous experiences of the Institute. The survey focuses on what services you valued most and how you feel the Institute could better meet your needs moving forwards.

It should only take between five and ten minutes to complete and none of the questions are mandatory, allowing you to give as much or as little information as you like.

New Qualifications: IAM

Our qualification development team have worked incredibly hard over the last month or so to transfer the IAM qualifications to IQ and as a result we have a phenomenal fifteen new QCF qualifications available this month!

The new qualifications, which range from levels 3-6, all had learners in the process of studying them when the IAM went into liquidation last year. This made them an immediate priority for our development team so that we could get these stranded learners back into classes again and allow them to finish their studies.

In order to ensure we don’t disadvantage any of the current learners, each of the qualifications remains largely unchanged from the original IAM versions. Moving forwards, however, we will start to review these qualifications more fully over the coming months and are already looking forward to evolving them further.

Skills CFA Seek Views on Revised Business & Administration Qualifications

Skills CFA have asked for all interested parties to complete the survey linked below detailing their views on the Rules of Combination for qualifications in the Business & Admin sector.

The new suites of qualifications have been developed for:

  • Business and Administration (Levels 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Customer Service (Levels 1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Management and Leadership (Levels 2, 3, 4, 5, 7).

These qualifications have been developed in consultation with a range of employers and key stakeholders and will be used as stand-alone qualifications as well as to underpin apprenticeships. They will replace existing qualifications in England and Wales in September 2014.

We are currently seeking feedback on the structure of each new qualification. It is critical that we gather the views of as many employers and employer-representative groups as possible to ensure that the qualifications meet the needs of employers and learners throughout England and Wales.

Please note that the deadline to confirm learners for the March series of assessments is Friday, 7th of March 2014.

Next steps for existing IAM Centres

We will have already been in touch with you to confirm potential numbers of learners for each qualification. Our quality team will be in touch separately with regards to processing your centre approval, and we will also write to you separately to confirm existing learners you had at IAM and which of these you would like to transfer to IQ for the March series. Please confirm learner details to us as soon as possible.

We will be accepting new learner registrations from centres, but will process these separately after confirming transfer of existing learners. Registration costs will be inline with the existing pricing structure of the IAM until further notice.

Independent Learners

We are not accepting any examination bookings for independent learners in the March '14 series, but will be accepting assignment submissions.

If you are an independent learner, or a learner of a centre which is no longer working with us, please write to us at confirming your full name, date of birth, IAM membership number (if known), and Paper ID / Unit numbers of any assignments you would like to submit in March by the 7th March deadline.

Important Information for IAM Centres Wanting to Put Candidates Through the March Assessment Series

As previously suggested the original March assessment window communicated by IAM before their liquidation will be pushed back towards the end of March.


We can now reveal that the dates have been confirmed as 25th – 28th March 2014.

All centres wishing to put candidates through this examination series or wishing to submit assignments for moderation need to urgently fill out the Current Demand Form detailing the number of candidates they have and which examinations / assignments are required and return it to by no later than 16:00 on Thursday 20th February.

We will then be in touch directly to obtain individual candidate details in order to register them on our system. If you have not returned the spreadsheet by this date, however, then we will not be able to accommodate you on the March series.

An exact timetable with regards to individual assessment groups will then be available on Friday 21st February.

With regards to assignments, we will set a deadline for them to be submitted to us by Friday 28th March. Although we had initially hoped to process the assignments of candidates who have already submitted their work before this date, due to time constraints we will now be moderating both the existing candidates’ work and the new March submissions at the same time.

We are hoping to open up registration to new candidates by the end of the month and will have more details on the process for this shortly.

The next examination series will likely take place in June, though again, more details on this will be communicated in due course.

Current Learners

Q: I’m currently enrolled on an IAM qualification / midway through my course, will I be able to continue with my studies?

A: Yes (with the exception of the National College and MOD specific qualifications), we are currently transferring the qualifications to IQ so you will be able to continue as before.

Q: I was due to sit an examination / submit an assignment in March. Is this still going ahead?

A: We have moved the March series back to 25th - 28th March. Contact your centre for more information.

Q: I’ve already paid my registration fees; will I have to pay again?

A: No, if you had already enrolled on your course then, provided we receive confirmation from the centre you registered with, we will honour all registration payments previously made to the IAM. Where examination / assignment fees apply, however, we will still require these to be paid.

Q: I’ve already submitted my assignments / sat my examinations and am waiting for my results, when can I get them?

A: We are working to process results as quickly as possible and candidates who are in this situation remain our number one priority. We will need to moderate existing work for quality purposes, however, meaning that we are unlikely to be able to confirm your result until after the March assessment series.

Q: Will my course content remain the same? / Will the assignment & examination marking criteria remain the same?

A: For the time being yes. We are looking to transfer all of the qualifications with the minimal amount of changes or disruption possible. Over the coming months, however, we may start to review the courses and make some changes but if you are already enrolled on a programme it will be unchanged.

Q: I am not attached to a centre but instead registered on a qualification as an independent candidate. What should I do?

Q: I have assignments I want to submit for marking / moderation in March, how do I do this?

If you are an independent candidate please let us know the details of the assignments you are submitting as soon as possible and ensure that you return them to us by the deadline of Friday the 28th March.


Q: Our centre was recognised by the IAM, are we now an IQ centre?

A: Yes, all IAM centres will now be provisionally recognised as IQ centres. This will enable us to clear the current backlog of students and get you up and running again. Once this backlog has been processed, however, you will be subject to the full quality assurance requirements of IQ, which involves an annual external verification / approval visit from IQ. Once this has occurred you should be in a position to receive an IQ centre approval certificate and appropriate certification claim status.


Q: Will there be any costs to becoming an IQ centre?

A: Not initially. When we undertake the approval / EV visit there will be a small cost associated to this activity which will then occur on an annual basis.

Q: We have X learners currently registered on IAM qualification Y, how can we transfer them to you?

A: The first step is to download, complete and return the spreadsheet that can be found here: This will enable us to obtain a much greater understanding of which qualifications we need to prioritise in bringing live. The deadline for returning this form is Thursday 20th February.

Q: I've missed the deadline for returning the centre demand form and registering for the March series but I still want to put candidates through in March, is this possible?

A: Unfortunately we may not be able to accommodate you and your candidates within the March series. Please do still get in touch as soon as possible, however, and we will do our best to get you set up on our systems in time.

Q: Are you planning on sticking to the IAM’s assessment timetable, specifically with regards to the March series?

A: No, we have moved the March series back to the 25th - 28th March. Information regarding the June series will be communicated at a later date.

Q: We have marked students’ assessments ready to be submitted and verified. What is the process for this?

A: Due to time constraints you will now need to submit these as part of the March series. We will then aim to process the results as quickly as possible.

Q: Will the fees remain the same / what will the registration and certification costs be?

A: TBC. We expect to make an announcement on initial pricing soon but do not expect this to change from current published IAM rates. We will be reviewing processes and procedures over the next quarter, however, with a view to streamlining and hope that this will result in more competitive pricing. We will be able to make an early change with regards to NVQ pricing, though, which will fall in line with current IQ pricing at £50 per qualification, with immediate effect.

Q: When can we start registering new candidates on the IAM qualifications?

A: We hope to open up the qualifications to new registrations at the beginning of March. You will need to be set up as a centre on our registration systems to do this, however, so please get in touch directly if you haven't already.

Q: What will the registration process look like? / How will we register candidates?

A: We will not be using the IAM registration forms. For the March series we will be confirming candidates on a spreadsheet via email. Moving forwards though, this will likely be through our own IQR registration system. Further information and guidance will of course be provided on this in due course.


Q: Are you re-launching the Institute as a membership body?

A: Yes! We will provide more details in the coming weeks and months and will be launching an open consultation on the direction of the Institute in March but we envisage that much of the current membership structure and levels will remain the same.

Q: Can I still use the IAM letters after my name? E.g. FInstAM

A: Yes.

Q: I am currently a fully paid member, will my membership still be valid?

A: Yes. We have some work to do to develop an understanding of membership payments but we will honour all payments that have been made so far and membership will remain valid for those whose membership has not expired.

Q: My membership is expiring / has expired. Are you accepting renewals?

A: Not at this stage. Please bear with us until the Institute is officially relaunched in Spring.

Q: Are you enrolling new members?

A: We hope to be in a position to welcome new members from April this year. Our target is to grow the membership base and re-establish IAM as a vibrant institute.

Q: Will IAM remain an awarding organisation?

A: No, the awarding operation will be separated from IAM and managed within the IQ portfolio of qualifications. However, the IAM management suite that we have purchased will be branded IAM. The institute will focus solely on providing membership services, research, learning events etc.

Open Letter to IAM Centres

In the wake of IQ's purchase of the Institute of Administrative Management, IQ Chief Executive Raymond Clarke writes to IAM centres to provide some further information on the acquisition and our efforts to cause minimal effects on current centres and students.


The Purchase of IAM by Industry Qualifications (IQ)

I am writing to let you know that the name and intellectual property of the Institute of Administrative Management have been purchased by Industry Qualifications Ltd (IQ), which will hopefully start to bring to a close a few months of uncertainty for IAM centres, students and members.

I’m pleased to confirm that we are keen to re-establish the IAM brand, qualifications and services as quickly and efficiently as possible, and I wanted to take the earliest opportunity to introduce IQ, and outline our initial plans.

Industry Qualifications (IQ)

I recognise that IQ is likely to be a new name for some of you, so perhaps if I can start by providing a short introduction. IQ is a regulated awarding organisation recognised by all four regulation authorities in the United Kingdom. Established in 2011, we are one of the fastest growing awarding organisations in the UK and enjoy a growing international presence. The company is uniquely constructed on mutual principles with a strong focus on quality, partnership, value and innovation. As you may appreciate, events have moved very quickly for us since becoming aware of the opportunity to acquire the IAM title and assets and we recognise that there is much to do, and that there will be a steep learning curve for IQ staff. The purchase, however, fits comfortably with our strategic plan to offer long course programmes and to grow our international presence. We look forward to working with stakeholders, therefore, to re-create a range of qualification products and an Institute that meets both member and stakeholder needs and is a strong international presence in the management sector.

Whilst detailed dialogue will be undertaken over the coming weeks and months, I wanted to take this opportunity to outline the broad direction of travel, and most importantly to emphasise our recognition that the most urgent issue for us to address is the re-establishment of the qualification structure.

IAM Qualifications

In parallel to the purchase of IAM qualification assets, IQ and the IAM have been in dialogue with Ofqual. As a result, we expect to have most or all of the IAM qualifications transferred to IQ and for them to be operational by early to mid-February. Whilst our initial focus will be on those awards with the largest volumes of students registered, in order that we can provide certainty to those currently studying, the intention is to re-establish the full suite.

There are still many questions to address and please excuse the absence of detail, but the intention is as follows:-

  • IAM qualifications will become IQ qualifications of the same title, branded IAM in the same way that Pearson uses the BTEC brand.
  • Student enrolment fees already paid will be recognised, with only examination fees due if they are applicable.
  • We will endeavour to run examination series to dates originally set by IAM. We expect to make a firm announcement on this within the coming weeks.
  • Centres approved by IAM will be automatically recognised by IQ, but will be subject to external verification visits on a planned basis, as early as is possible.
  • We will provide a more detailed letter for students, specific to their course of studies, as early as we can in February. As you may expect, we have a considerable amount of data to assimilate in the coming weeks and we wish to ensure that we communicate effectively with students and centres.

We are in the process of agreeing a plan with Ofqual to review all of the IAM qualifications and units over the course of the coming twelve months to ensure their suitability moving forward.

IAM Institute Services

Whilst the re-launch of IAM qualifications is our highest priority, we will be opening dialogue with Institute members and stakeholders as we move into the spring on the nature of the Institute that they would wish to see moving forward. At this stage, it is our intention to maintain the membership categories, but we are interested to learn about the services that were or could be important to members, and the way in which they would wish to see their institute structured. We understand that over 100,000 people have been members since the Institute was established and we wish to respect this history, whilst providing a forward looking and innovative body that is firmly anchored in the future.

In addition to membership services and structure, we will also make a decision on the future of The Manager magazine by early March and would be interested in developing an understanding of member’s views.
