Further information on IQ's five English Functional Skills qualifications.

The IQ English Functional Skills suite consists of five qualifications. These are:

(Click on any of the above qualification titles to access detailed information such as the specifications).

English Functional Skills form a mandatory part of apprenticeship programmes for learners without a GCSE at grades A*- C.

Each qualification consists of a single unit which is divided into three constituent parts, which are separately assessed. These are:

    • Speaking, listening and communication (SLC)
    • Reading
    • Writing.

IQ assessment tasks are based on scenarios that reflect real life and work situations. For example, in the writing assessments the learner might be asked to compose an email to their boss, whilst a reading paper might test their understanding of a set of company procedures and an SLC component might consist of a ‘pitch’ to a local employer.

At the Entry levels, IQ supply a themed set of assessment materials that can be adapted to reflect your learners’ own unique circumstances and working & living environment. These Entry level assessments are marked by the centre and externally verified by IQ. A training PowerPoint, which shows centres how to mark the assessments is available for approved centres.

The SLC component is an internally set and marked assessment at Entry level and Level 1 and Level 2. IQ have sample assessments for centres to use, however, centres can also use any naturally occurring opportunities that allow for assessment in a single session. SLC evidence is recorded in the Achievement Record and a completed sample achievement record is available.

At Level 1 or Level 2, the papers are externally set and marked by IQ. Both paper-based and onscreen assessments are available on demand. Sample assessment papers are available to try here or you can download them separately from the qualification pages.

IQ has produced Teaching and Assessment Guides for Functional Skills English which can be downloaded here: IQ Guide to Teaching FS English, IQ Guide Assessment of FS Writing , IQ Guide to Assessment of FS SLC
