Functional Skills Pilot

Working with expert partners, IQ is developing functional skills qualifications which reflect the needs of employers and their staff. Assessment will reflect the language and the processes of the workplace and start to provide a solution to the issues that have hampered the introduction of functional skills within a working environment.

To ensure that the assessment really does meet your needs we are offering you a chance to be part of the development. We are looking for those of you that would like to pilot a more appropriate work-based assessment; this will enable us to ensure we have the level, time, context, and quality and standards right.

We are keen to work with any provider offering work based learning, including employers. We are particularly interested in your views if you have learners studying or training in the following sectors:

  • Security and events
  • Hospitality
  • Health and social care
  • Building services, facilities, logistics
  • Management, business administration, teaching

What are the benefits of offering Functional Skills to your learners?

This Functional Skills Assessment Pilot will introduce learners to English, maths and ICT through their current learning context and will use language that is familiar to them. It allows them to acquire knowledge and skills and to apply them in different contexts. The qualifications will equip learners with the skills they need, for example communicating, being effective in solving mathematical problems and using ICT in practical settings.

How can I and my learners benefit from this pilot?

By being part of this pilot, you will be able to offer your learners an alternative to the current functional skills assessment models and share your own ideas and experiences with us and other providers. Your learners will have a chance to practise realistic assessment in a non-threatening environment. By being part of the pilot you will also have access to a functional skills expert who will be able to support you as you introduce the qualifications.

The pilot assessments are not accredited and there will be no charge to join the pilot.

Who can offer the IQ Functional Skills Assessment Pilot?

Essentially any centre in England that would like an alternative model of assessment and would be willing to give us feedback. You do not have to be an IQ centre to take part this pilot.  We do ask that you:

  • have a cohort of at least 10 learners available for each of the assessments
  • commit to returning the feedback form after each assessment has taken place
  • agree to keep the content of the assessment confidential.

If you would like to be part of the IQ Functional Skills Assessment Pilot please complete the application form and return by email or post to
