Functional Skills Explained

Functional Skills qualifications are designed to give learners the skills to operate confidently, effectively and independently in education, work and everyday life.

They have been created in response to employers' recommendations that learners would benefit from a thorough grounding in the basics and the ability to problem-solve.

The qualifications are available in English, mathematics and ICT at entry level 1, 2, 3 and level 1 and 2 and assess the Ofqual Functional Skills standards, coverage and range.

Entry level and Speaking Listening and Communication (at all levels) are externally set and Level 1 and Level 2 are externally assessed.

All of our level 1 and 2 Functional Skills can be delivered via either on-screen or paper-based assessment, providing flexibility to both learners and centres.

Each Functional Skill can be delivered as a stand-alone qualification,  as part of an Apprenticeship or Traineeship, or as part of an integrated Study Programme.
